It's important to know that a visit to the dentist can be a positive experience regardless if it is for a simple cleaning or more extensive treatment. Nearly 30% of Americans are afraid of the dentist. They avoid dental care at all costs, even when they are in pain or discomfort. But it no longer has to be that way! Modern dentistry offers several options for safe, effective, and comfortable treatment to anxious and fearful patients.
At the office of Dr. Romaine and Associates, our staff is trained to work with fearful patients and we offer nitrous and IV sedation alternatives.
Nitrous Oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, is an effective anesthetic drug that is commonly used in many dental offices and the effects are often remarkable with little to no side effects. A patient that was anxious just a minute or two before treatment will become relaxed and calm. Because nitrous oxide is so effective, dentists rarely need to prescribe Valium for anxious patients before treatment. If you are nervous before dental treatment, ask about nitrous.
Intravenous (IV) sedation dentistry is used primarily for moderate to severe dental surgical procedures (ie wisdom teeth extraction) and for patients that want to be asleep during their dental treatment. IV sedation is only offered at our Frostburg office.
Benefits of IV Sedation:
• It's extremely effective for moderate to severe anxiety
• It's quick-acting
• The level of sedation can be adjusted during the procedure so that you remain comfortable at all times
• In many cases, you can get ALL of your dental work done in one visit
During intravenous sedation (IV sedation), an anti-anxiety drug is administered into the bloodstream to achieve a deeper level of sedation which can be adjusted as needed during the treatment. Although you will not actually be asleep, you will enjoy a heightened state of relaxation and will probably not remember much about the procedure afterwards. Your dreaded appointment will feel like minutes in the chair.
So don't keep pushing your needed dental work off!
